The Rise of Protective Textiles: India's Path to a $350 Billion Market by 2038
I've observed and come across through my industry interactions extensively on Protective Textiles that they're essential in every sector, from homes and kitchens to factories and beyond. Wherever you look, the need is clear.
By 2038, this market will reach $350 billion globally, with India exporting $100 billion. To fuel this, we'll require 23-25 million tonnes of fibre—natural, synthetic, or viscose. Textiles remain India's largest sector after agriculture.
Under the UPA government, we imported barely 50 lakh machines for stitching, leather, gardening, and more. During Modi ji's tenure, imports surged past 2 crores. Today, people operate 1.7 machines each, and employment has jumped from 14 to 25 million workers focused in this vital sector. This growth is creating jobs like never before.
We've pioneered New Age Fibres that the world craves—especially in Europe, where 20% of fibres are already recycled. India aims for 100% sustainable fibres: recycled or natural. The government has championed this with innovations like milk beads, Ramei, Linen, natural mechanical fibres, banana fibre, hemp, and more. We've elevated natural fibres to 10 key variants, and we're actively developing them. These will transform the industry in the coming days.
Milk weeds are a super hit—unmatched anywhere in the world. Developed in collaboration with industry leaders, they excel in shoes, socks, woolens, and exports, performing reliably down to minus 30 degrees. We've tested them rigorously and taken them global.
Protective textiles represent an emerging powerhouse—today's session highlights this focus on innovation. We will achieve it.
