Global Apparel Trade Update | Feb'25

The global apparel trade & retail update report for February 2025. It provides an overview of the latest apparel consumption and trade data for major supplier and buyer nations. This month's key highlights are as follows.

In January 2025, US macroeconomic indicators signaled a downturn, as inflation rose for the fourth consecutive month to 3%, while consumer confidence dropped further to 104.1 from 104.7 in the previous month.

On February 27-28, 2025, Mumbai's BEC (NESCO) Hall No. 6 became the central hub for the Retail Leadership Summit 2025 (RLS 2025), an event convened by the Retailers Association of India (RAI). This congregation assembled the crème de la crème of the retail industry converged from across the retail landscape.

Recognized as a leading national retail forum, RLS 2025 fostered discussions on forward-thinking ideas, novel approaches and emerging norms, and collaborative ventures, all aimed at dissecting the shifting retail landscape.

South Eastern Coalfield Limited (SECL) and Apparel Training & Design Centre (ATDC) ink MoU for providing employable skills to 400 candidates from an economically weaker section.

South Eastern Coalfield Limited (SECL), a mini Maharatna Company under the Ministry of Coal, and Apparel Training & Design Centre (ATDC), a leading Vocational Training Provider in India, set up by Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC).

ATDC so far has rolled out more than 4,00,000 candidates for the Garment Industry.

Speaking to Salil Chawla, Director of FashionatingWorld I DFU at Bharat Tex 2025, Giuseppe Gherzi, Managing Director of Gherzi Textile Organisation, offers a balanced view, acknowledging India's potential while stressing the need for strategic changes.

Mr Gherzi's assessment portrays an India poised for significant textile sector growth.

Addressing at CITI Sustainability Awards 2024-25 on 17th Feb. 2025, Hon'ble Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for the Ministry of Textiles, stated that on behalf of the Ministry, I thank everyone for making Bharat Tex 2025 a resounding success.

The event was a triumph with over 1 lakh attendees, 5,000+ group activities, and 6,000 international buyers. We were also honored by the Prime Minister's presence, who challenged us to triple the textile industry's volume by 2030. The ministry pledges its support in achieving this goal under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and Param Adityanath.

Textiles Minister to inaugurate Bharat Tex 2025

Second edition of Bharat Tex will focus on sustainable products.

The Union Minister for Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, will be inaugurating the second edition of Bharat Tex 2025 in presence of a large number of dignitaries and international buyers at Expo Mart Greater Noida on 12th February 2025. Following the resounding success of the inaugural Bharat Tex held in February 2024,  the upcoming edition promises to be even more impactful.

Bharat Tex 2025 is poised to bring business opportunities and strategic partnerships to the forefront.

New report highlights the need for solutions to tackle exploitation of workers and children in Bangladesh's garment sector.

A new report from the University of Nottingham’s Rights Lab and GoodWeave International highlights the risk of modern slavery and child labor in Bangladesh's garment supply chains and provides concrete recommendations to industry stakeholders to advance worker and child protection in the sector.

The ready-made garment (RMG) sector of Bangladesh employs over four million people.

NITMA commends the governments move to impose BCD of “20% or Rs 115 pkg, whichever is higher” on knitted fabrics 
falling under chapter 60 on 9 HS codes.

However, these 9 HS codes account for only 35% of the total imports of 
fabrics & remaining 65% of the imports are still left unchecked.

The move by the government is recognition of the fact that these fabrics are being smuggled into the country.

Union Budget enhances global competitiveness for textile industry – SIMA.

The textile industry is the second largest employment provider of the nation, next only to agriculture that provides jobs predominantly to rural masses especially women to the tune of 110 million and the Government has set a vision of increasing the textile business size from the current level of USD 162 billion to USD 350 billion and the exports from the level of USD 35 billion to USD 100 billion by 2030.

The NDA Government led by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi having set a vision of 5Fs (Farm – Fibre – Factory – Fashion – Foreign) has been taking several pathbreaking initiatives to enhance the global competitiveness by addressing the structural issues.
